Having the latest router firmware ensures that you have the latest updates against potentially dangerous security issues. For those of us running the popular WRT54G router, Cisco provides information on the router based on the router version number that can be found underneath the device.

Once you have the router firmware version number, you have to compare that number to the one listed by your router administration pannel. Most likely you will see the firmware version on the top right corner of the pannel.

If they match, you are all set. If they do not, then a firmware update is advisable. Follow manufacturer’s instructions for details.
